Looking for an alternative to the Waitomo Caves?

You don’t need to leave the city to experience glowworms in the wild. Just 20 minutes from central Auckland, this private evening walk takes you into a secluded native forest where New Zealand glowworms (Titiwai) shine across mossy forest walls like stars.

No caves. No crowds. No buses.

Just you, a local guide, and nature at night.

What You'll Do

This small-group night walk is designed for travellers who want something different.

After meeting your guide in central Auckland, you’ll be driven to a nearby native forest reserve, home to one of the region’s best naturally-occurring glowworm colonies.

As night falls, your guide will lead you through the forest on a flat, easy trail. With no artificial lighting, the glowworms shine brightest in full darkness.

Lighting up the forest walls in soft, scattered constellations. You’ll learn about the fascinating life cycle of the Titiwai, the conditions that make this location perfect for them, and the broader ecosystem that supports their glow.

When conditions allow, you may also hear small creeks running through the forest or spot other native wildlife settling for the night.

“This is one of the rare spots in Auckland where the unique forest landscape creates the perfect conditions for a once-in-a-lifetime glowworm experience.”

Common Questions

Q: Is this safe for kids?

Yes — older children who can walk comfortably in low light will enjoy the experience. It’s quiet, non-scary, and magical.

Q: How much does it cost?

The Glow Worm Experience is $110 NZD per person.

This is a small, boutique experience — we take a maximum of five guests, or six for private bookings. You won’t find yourself lost in a crowd or following a busload of tourists. Every group is small, personal and guided by a local who’s passionate about sharing a special, secret spot.

We don’t offer discounts, family passes or child rates — each seat is priced equally. You’re paying for quality, exclusivity, and the chance to experience something most visitors will never see.

Q: Do we go into caves?

No. Glowworm Grotto is a forest-based experience — you’ll see glowworms on natural bush walls, not in caves.

Q: Is this a good alternative to Waitomo?

Yes — especially if you’re short on time or prefer to avoid the crowds and tourist buses. This experience is completely different, local and personal.

Q: Can I take photos?

Yes, but no flash or bright lights. Your guide will let you know when and help you get a good shot while respecting the glowworms.

Q: What if it rains?

The walk still runs in the rain (glowworms love damp air). If its forecast for wild weather creating unsafe conditions, we’ll offer a reschedule or refund.
